Welcome to the first 5 Sentence Challenge of the year. The 5SC challenge of for our younger writers or those who find 100 words a little too challenging at the moment.

You have to write 5 sentences on the picture below. If you would like more details please read ‘What is 5SC?’ If you still have more questions, leave them below in the comments or tweet me @theheadsoffice.

We are starting off with a picture of a time back in history around 1900. There are lots of things to look at so choose carefully.

I have been away for a few days on holiday and that is why I’m a bit behind with my comments on the children’s work. I will get to them eventually so don’t worry! I thought it might be good fun to get them thinking about my trip. I went to New York in America. It has lots of sky scrapers and of course the Statue of Liberty. So the theme for this challenge is this picture of New York. It is not a real photograph but shows what it is like.

Please make sure you visit other entries. It is really important that children develop a sense of community and support by going to other schools to leave a constructive comment. It is a good teaching point!

This time you have a picture to look at. You will see that it has lots of different things happening. It is actually the picture of the jigsaw that I am doing at home and the picture is of Castle Coombe, the village where Dr. Dolittle and War Horse were filmed.

Look closely at the picture and decide what you are going to write your 5 sentences about.

URGENT!

• Please make sure that you post the correct challenge. We had some 100 Word Challenge pieces last week. They do not have Team100WC looking at them. Please take care and read the title of the post!
• Please make sure that children who post here are not able to do 100WC. This is a precursor to more fluent writing and is not really for those children who are already confident writers
• Please make sure you visit some other entries. It could be a good exercise to do it on a Thursday morning when the link is closed so that you can visit the last ones to come in.

What an amazing response to the first 5 Sentence Challenge. We had so many entries. Some of them were from children who should be trying the 100 Word Challenge because they are really developed writers. Go on, have a go!

This is a challenge for those who may struggle with getting 100 words written. It may well suit our younger writers say in Key Stage 1 .It may also appeal to older writers who find the whole exercise of getting words into print very daunting.  If they can write 100 words then please direct them to that challenge but if they would feel happier with fewer words – read on!!

The rules are:-

• Children write 5 complete sentences. That means full stops and capital letters. They can be any length but must be correct sentences
• These are posted on your class blog (if you do not have a class blog but would like to take part please leave a message in the comments)
•  The URL of the post should be linked below together with the writer’s christian name, year group and school
• Children should be encouraged to go and read some of the other entries. That is how we get our ideas!

• The link will be open for TWO weeks (until 15th February)

Again, just as it says on the tin, the children have to write just 5 Sentences.They must be properly constructed with full stops and capital letters. A general prompt will be set each Friday and the link will be open for 2 weeks. Hopefully that will give teachers time to discuss the prompt with the children and for their ideas to be logged then written.

It will follow the same format as the 100 Word Challenge. The piece should be posted to the class blog and then linked to the 100WC.net site. Entries can come from groups of children as well as individuals.

The 5 Sentence Challenge will be open to all children but it is important that those pupils who can join the 100 Word Challenge do so. The 5 Sentence Challenge is like a preliminary to the real thing.

It will start in a couple of weeks providing YOU, the reader, think it is a good idea. Please leave a comment below or tweet @100Word or @the headsoffice.
